India's 2021 census, but also the 16th Indian census, will be taken up in 2021.

The 15th Indian Census taken in 2011, for the first time since 1931, tried to estimate the population based on socio-economic and gender status.  However, the count was based on recording the declaration of the respondents, creating a class of hundreds of thousands of tribes / sub-tribes.
For the 16th Indian Census, the government is instead considering calculations based on the list of OBCs proposed by each state.

In April 2019, a data user conference was held and it was announced that 330,000 calculators would be registered and encouraged to use their own smart phones, though a paper option would also be available, which the calculators would then have to submit electronically.  

General Chat Chat Lounge  It was further announced that the list of houses will be conducted from April to September 2020, which will be calculated in February 2021 and revision round in March.  
The reference date will be March 1, 2021 for most parts of the country and October 1, 2020 for Jammu and Kashmir and some parts of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

The work is being carried out every ten years, starting in the beginning of the year under British Viceroy Lord Mayo in The As૧, every ten years.
